People can purse prey at high speed with cars and airplanes. Use of powerful boats and better nets means people can access deep oceans where our bodies would not survive. Better weapons mean that hunting and fishing are relatively safe activities, at least compared with animal hunts. The human species was able to become a superpredator through technology, which has allowed us to escape the limits usually found in predator-prey relationships. But due to fishing pressures, they currently begin breeding at four-and-a-half years old and produce fewer offspring. Cod, for instance, can live for more than two decades and usually start breeding around six years old. Removing those fish dials back the reproductive capabilities of the population, and it can also affect the evolution of a species. Old, large fish tend to produce the most offspring, sometimes hundreds of thousands of eggs in a single year. This chart shows that the rates at which humans exploit land mammals and marine fish vastly exceed the impacts of other predators.īut this practice can have ramifications for a population, Darimont said, especially among fish. “Those juveniles then grow to become adults available for harvests in the future,” he said. Also, most fisheries and wildlife management schemes specifically call for adults to be harvested, because in theory it frees food and other resources for juveniles, lead author Chris Darimont of the University of Victoria noted at the teleconference. When processed, older animals provide more meat for the effort. Humans target adult animals for many reasons. Humans take a median of 14 percent-and as much as 80 percent or more in extreme cases. Marine predators harvest about 1 percent of adult biomass each year. In the oceans, the situation is even more dramatic. But the harvest of adult carnivores by humans was nine times that of other large carnivores, which were mostly killing each other through competition. In some cases, such as with herbivores on land, they found that humans kill adult prey at about the same rate as non-human predators do. Eventually, he and his colleagues gathered more than 2,200 data points on 399 prey species from every ocean and all the continents except Antarctica. Inspired by this ecological disconnect, Reimchen began collecting data from other studies that had looked at predators, including humans, and the characteristics of the prey they were consuming. “This situation contrasted dramatically with the commercial fishing I observed in adjacent marine waters, which were taking from 40 to 80 percent of the biomass of salmon and herring, and then predominantly the reproductive-age classes,” Reimchen recalled at a telephone press conference held on Wednesday. This was because the predators overwhelming consumed fry, juveniles and sub-adults, eating only 5 percent of the reproductively valuable adults each year. Despite the number of predators, the stickleback population remained steady. There, 22 species of trout, loons and other predators fed on stickleback fish. The new study got its start back in the 1970s, when Thomas Reimchen of the University of Victoria was studying predator-prey interactions in a remote Canadian lake. “Depleting the capital is risky, particularly in long-lived, late-maturing organisms.” “Adult individuals provide the ‘reproductive capital’ of a population, akin to the financial capital in a bank account or retirement fund,” Dalhousie University biologist Boris Worm notes in a commentary that accompanies the study, published today in Science. Humans, by contrast, are far more likely to be killing big strapping adults, particularly among carnivores on land and fish in the ocean. Across the animal world, predators focus their efforts on juveniles. The human species really is unlike any other predator on the planet, especially when it comes to our choice of prey.

Reflective, light-colored surfaces inside a home or office tend to increase light intensity, while dark surfaces decrease light intensity. Other factors such as curtains, trees outside the window, weather, season of the year, shade from other buildings and window cleanliness also effect light intensity. Light intensity can be measured in three ways: luminous intensity, luminous flux and luminous power. The new formula 1cd = 1 lm /sr and inputting a light flux of 700lm and a sphere surface area of 12,57m², we can calculate the light intensity of the bulb: 1lm/sr = 1cd. You use the same calculation to find the candelas. How is light intensity measured in candela? One lux (Latin for “light”) is the amount of illumination provided when one lumen is evenly distributed over an area of one square metre. Lux, unit of illumination (see luminous intensity) in the International System of Units (SI). A candela is therefore equal to 1 lumen x square meter per steradian. The equation 1 lx = 1 cd x sr / square meter is equivalent to 1 cd = 1 lm x m^2 / sr. This shows that 1 lx = 1 lm / m^2 = 1 cd x sr / m^2, so 1 lx = 1 cd x sr / square meter. Luminous intensity is defined as dI=dΨλ / dΩ, where dΨλ is the luminous flux (light energy flux in watts per m2) emitted within a solid angle dΩ. What is the formula of luminous intensity? 1 lumen (lm) per square foot (ft²) corresponds to 10.764 lux (lx). How many lumens has a lux? 1 lumen (lm) per square metre (m²) corresponds to 1 lux (lx). Colorimeters and spectrometers use collimating optics, which is how they can output level in nits from so close. For far away small enough sensor, lux = nit * Pi, nit = lux/Pi. Light intensity represents the amplitude of light with the same wavelength, and light wavelength is a property of light that determines the colors of the light (Sliney, 2016). Is light intensity the same as wavelength? Distance between the slits is d=5λ, where λ is the wavelength of monochromatic light used in the experiment. The maximum intensity in Young’s double slit experiment is I0. What is the formula of maximum intensity? How is light intensity related to amplitude?Īs defined in physics, the intensity of a wave is proportional to the square of its amplitude (A2 ∝ I). The intensity is directly proportional to the square of the amplitude of a wave and can be expressed as I ∝ A 2, where I is the intensity and A is the amplitude. How do you calculate amplitude and intensity? According to the electromagnetic theory, the intensity of a wave is directly proportional to its amplitude, i.e., I ∝ A 2. Intensity: The intensity of light can be defined as the energy that is transmitted per unit area in one unit of time. The energy in the light wave (its intensity is in J/m2s. Their kinetic energy and the number of emitted electrons can be measured as a function of the intensity and light frequency. Hint:In the photoelectric effect, when an incident light strikes on the surface of a metal that causes the electrons to be ejected. What is intensity of light in photoelectric effect? The intensity is defined as power per unit area, and power is defined as energy per unit time. What is the formula of intensity in photoelectric effect? Brightness involves how the human visual system perceives light, and it is not a physical quantity. Intensity is the power per unit area it is a physical quantity. The SI unit of luminous intensity is the candela (cd), an SI base unit. (In the US it’s common to express light intensity in unit of foot-candles. So one lux is one lumen per square meter, this relating brightness to distance from the source. However, what matters most in terms of measuring light intensity is the number of lumens falling on a surface, which is expressed as lux. On the other hand, young Louise is only interested in her future and her dreams of becoming the best dancer on the planet. But that's not the main reason for the trip: she arrived in Kansas on an orphan train from NYC, and she hopes to find more information about her birth parents in the metropolis. Soon we'll realise that Norma's marriage is not in an ideal state. Denis (Miranda Otto), she impulsively volunteers for the job. When she overhears Louise's mother talk about needing a chaperone to accompany Louise to classes given in New York by the biggest company in modern dance, run by Ted Shawn (Robert Fairchild) and Ruth St. The star of that event is young Louise, who charmingly glides over the floor in her white robes and captivates Norma within seconds. We meet Norma in Wichita, Kansas, in 1922, where she and her husband Alan (Campbell Scott) are attending an evening of dance to benefit the Children's Home. The other main character who goes through a life changing experience is Norma Carlisle (Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern), Brooks' chaperone. Which is interesting, since the story is actually about Louise Brooks (Haley Lu Richardson), an actress best known for some provocative silent films and her free-spirited life who was living her life way ahead of time. The film has its pleasures, but nothing too wild actually happens. The Chaperone definitely didn't feel as roaring as they say about the 1920s, so it's safe to say you don't need to bring one yourself. It will most likely be one of the major bureaus. The easiest way to unfreeze your file for the purposes of gaining new credit is to spend a few minutes on the phone with the company from which you hope to gain the line of credit (or research the matter online) to see which credit bureau they rely upon for credit checks. One important caveat: It’s best not to wait until the last minute before starting the freeze thawing process, which can be instantaneous or can take a few days. Needless to say, it’s a good idea to keep these PINs somewhere safe and reliable in the event you wish to unfreeze. When that time comes, consumers can temporarily thaw a freeze for a specified duration either online or by phone (see above resources). When you place a freeze, each credit bureau will assign you a personal identification number (PIN) that needs to be supplied if and when you ever wish to open a new line of credit. However, a freeze on your file does nothing to prevent the bureaus from collecting information about you as a consumer - including your spending habits and preferences - and packaging, splicing and reselling that information to marketers. By the same token, freezes do nothing to prevent crooks from abusing unauthorized access to these existing accounts.Īccording to experts, the bureaus make about $1 every time they sell access your credit file. Having a freeze in place does nothing to prevent you from using existing lines of credit you may already have, such as credit, mortgage and bank accounts. Bear in mind, however, that while lenders and service providers are supposed to seek and obtain your approval before granting credit in your name if you have a fraud alert on your file, they’re not legally required to do this. With a fraud alert on your credit file, lenders or service providers should not grant credit in your name without first contacting you to obtain your approval - by phone or whatever other method you specify when you apply for the fraud alert.Īnother important change: Fraud alerts now last for one year (previously they lasted just 90 days) but consumers can renew them each year. It also changes the rules for “ fraud alerts,” which currently are free but only last for 90 days. In addition, the law requires the big three bureaus to offer free electronic credit monitoring services to all active duty military personnel. However, this process is not currently available online or by phone, as it requires parents/guardians to submit written documentation (“sufficient proof of authority”), such as a copy of a birth certificate and copy of a Social Security card issued by the Social Security Administration, or - in the case of an incapacitated family member - proof of power of attorney. The new law also makes it free to place, thaw and lift freezes for dependents under the age of 16, or for incapacitated adult family members. Spouses may request freezes for each other by phone as long as they pass authentication. Here’s the updated contact information for the big three: To file a freeze, consumers must contact each of the three major credit bureaus online, by phone or by mail. With a freeze in place on your credit file, ID thieves can apply for credit in your name all they want, but they will not succeed in getting new lines of credit in your name because few if any creditors will extend that credit without first being able to gauge how risky it is to loan to you (i.e., view your credit file).Īnd because each credit inquiry caused by a creditor has the potential to lower your credit score, the freeze also helps protect your score, which is what most lenders use to decide whether to grant you credit when you truly do want it and apply for it. Today, those fees no longer exist.Ī security freeze essentially blocks any potential creditors from being able to view or “pull” your credit file, unless you affirmatively unfreeze or thaw your file beforehand. Previously, states allowed the bureaus to charge a confusing range of fees for placing, temporarily thawing or lifting a credit freeze. If you’ve been holding out because you’re not particularly worried about ID theft, here’s another reason to reconsider: The credit bureaus profit from selling copies of your file to others, so freezing your file also lets you deny these dinosaurs a valuable revenue stream.Įnacted in May 2018, the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act rolls back some of the restrictions placed on banks in the wake of the Great Recession of the last decade. state to freeze and unfreeze your credit file and that of your dependents, a process that blocks identity thieves and others from looking at private details in your consumer credit history. |
